From Larry: See below for a great report on America.
Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility to Preserve it.
by Erin
(Larry: a quick note: She wrote this off the top in about 30 minutes, then turned
in the report to a teacher. I couldn't have written this well with a month of work)
Every time we turn on a light, every time we see an individual fighting for their rights, every time we hear a political leader speak, every time we see a soldier go into battle and every and every time we see that star-spangled banner wave, we take these immense privileges for granted. Over the course of many centuries these great opportunities have been earned.
Before the European settlement, Native Americans had preserved and lived on this land. The Native Americans were a very strong and hard-working people. Then in 1492, Columbus arrived in the Americas. The Europeans brought many foods, technologies and governmental ideas with them. England tried to rule us, so we fought for our freedom. This was our country's first and proving battle to show that we are our own people. We were a new people, a brave people and best of all, a free people.
Our founding fathers built us a government based upon God, home and country. Almost all documents give credit to God. Family values were highly esteemed. Many were willing to even lay down their life for our country. Unlike many countries who are under a dictatorship, or led by one certain blood-line, Americans have the choice to vote for our prime leader. As Americans we also have the right to choose many smaller scaled leaders who help form laws and bring justice to our nation.
Just as our country had to fight very hard for their rights a couple of centuries ago, we are still battling today. We have men and women keeping us safe by air, water and land everywhere. Countless people have lost their lives for this luxurious safety and freedom we are granted today.
Since our country allows us such a tremendous opportunity of freedom, many brilliant thinkers have developed here. We had the discoverer of electricity. We have made great advances in the medical field. We hold many opportunities through our daily technology. We have the benefit of getting free education, in order for the future generations to prosper.
We can also thank the individuals who fought for equal rights. Many groups of people who feel strongly about a topic have had the right to petition and speak out to receive their deserved rights. This is because we have freedom of speech. Freedom of speech means that whatever an individual thinks would benefit our nation is considered in the formation of the way it is run.
Many different ethnic groups wish to live in America. The movement and blend of these groups into our nation helps our culture to remain and become even more diverse. Interesting ideas, traditions and people result from this movement.
The heritage of our nation is so deep that we have no choice but to preserve it. We must preserve it to honor the ones that have granted us this country. We must preserve it so that the future generations will continue to prosper. We must preserve it because of its immense brilliance. Mostly, we must remember our heritage, because each and every one of the discoverers, leaders, scientists and cultural group's blood flows through us. We are a product of them and this is the greatest honor of all. "We the people" are "the land of the free and the home of the brave".
